The Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) is helping in a new international project to manufacture perovskite solar panels in Africa.

The project, called REACH-PSM, brings together partners from Nigeria, South Africa, Rwanda, Kenya, and Swansea University in the UK. It’s all about creating affordable, sustainable energy solutions and producing solar panels locally, where they’re most needed.

At FUTO, Prof. Emeka Oguzie and his team are co-developing the manufacturing process. To support this, they recently purchased Fluxim’s Paios system—the all-in-one platform for characterizing organic and perovskite solar cells.

We’re proud to see Paios being chosen to support research in such an important effort. With over 500 million people in Africa lacking electricity, projects like this are a big step forward.

The REACH-PSM project is funded by the UKRI Ayrton Challenge Programme with a £3 million award. It is led by Swansea University and brings together partners from Federal University of Technology Owerri (Nigeria), Egerton University and Strathmore University (Kenya), University of KwaZulu-Natal, North-West University, and University of Cape Town (South Africa). The project builds on Swansea’s TEA@SUNRISE and UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Energy Technologies, and focuses on developing local manufacturing of sustainable perovskite solar modules in Africa.

Thanks to Trystan Watson for his recommendation.
