The African Centre for Excellence in Future Energies and Electrochemical Systems (ACE-FUELS) @ FUTO, joined the international community in marking the 2025 UNESCO International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
This year’s event themed “Unpacking STEM Careers: Her Voice in Science”, marked the 10th anniversary of the celebration, highlighting the importance of promoting women’s participation in science.
The day’s events at ACE-FUELS had two sessions.
In the morning session, the Centre hosted the breakfast meeting of Women in Chemistry of the Imo State Chapter of the Chemical Society of Nigeria.
The afternoon session involved live streaming of the webinar and panel discussion marking the IDWGS 10th anniversary celebrations at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris and primarily targetted female students from the university and the university’s host communities, who converged enthusiastically at the ACE-FUELS Multipurpose Hall. The session also included pep talks by ACE-FUELS faculty and an open house where participants shared insights, experiences, and takeaways from the event.
Many of the participants expressed delight at the opportunity to participate in an ACE-FUELS activity and requested to be notified of other activities organized by the Centre towards promoting women’s participation in STEM+E.
The UNESCO International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated annually on February 11 to champion gender equality in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
The activities at ACE-FUELS highlight the Centre’s commitment to developing strategies to promote female participation and enrollment in STEM+E (science, technology, engineering and mathematics , plus energy).
